Historians Shares Discovery of the History of Tice Valley and Stanley Dollar, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023
Jim Pearson and Margaret Neal De Graca, two Rossmoor residents and self-taught historians, will give a presentation about the history of Tice Valley and Stanley Dollar, after whom Stanley Dollar Street is named, to the Volunteer Exchange on February 1. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
Jim will speak about the people who have occupied Tice Valley over the past five hundred years, beginning with the Saklan Indians and continuing with the Romero Brothers, the Tice Family, and the Naphtaly Family. The experiences and enterprises of these three families reflect many elements of life in early Contra Costa County, including the ranchero period, land grants, cattle rustling, shootings, squatters, and the development of electric railroads.
Margaret will focus on the Dollar Family and their legacy. When Margaret and her husband moved to Stanley Dollar Street in Rossmoor over 10 years ago, she wanted to know where the unusual street name came from. Her curiosity led her to discover the interesting life of Robert Stanley Dollar, a powerful shipping magnate and industrialist of a bygone era.
