Talk on an Education Program in a Refugee Camp, Wednesday, March 4
At the March meeting, the Volunteer Exchange will learn about an educational program for girls and woman that takes place in a refugee camp on Lesvos, an island off the coast of Greece. The refugees come from many different countries. The meeting will be on March 4 at 10:30 am in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
The presentation will be by one of the directors of Refugee Education and Learning International (REAL). This organization was founded several years ago by two Rossmoor residents. They are retired educators Cecelia Wambach and Carolie Sly.
The organization’s volunteers teach academic subjects (with a special focus on the English language) as well as life skills such as bike-riding, swimming, and more. The purpose is to help the refugees gain self-esteem and prepare them for life in a culture which is often very different from the one from which they came.
As always, non-members are welcome to attend club meetings.
**********************************************************************************
The men and women of the Volunteer Exchange perform services for each other such as transportation and pet care. In this way, they earn credit hours which they can use in the future to “pay” other members for services. New members able to provide services are always welcome. Services are not available to non-members.
Detailed information about the club can be found on the club’s web page. The web page can be easily accessed via a link in the “Clubs” section on the www.rossmoor.com web page.
For more information, residents are invited to attend one of the monthly meetings or call 906-9882.
