Linnea Lion, Contra Costa County Master Gardener and Nursery Assistant at The Ruth Bancroft Garden, will be speaking about "Succulent Gardening for Small Spaces" at the Volunteer Exchange Program on Wednesday, April 6, at 10:30 am in the Fireside Room at Gateway. She will present ideas for containers, use of succulents on decks, and for small yards. Plants will be for sale at the meeting. Refreshments will be served.
Linnea has a unique and extensive background in design and horticulture she uses in her work at The Ruth Bancroft Garden located in Walnut Creek where she started as an intern in 2015. She continues her work there with her creative influence. She has an Associate degree in Biology from Los Medanos College, attended San Francisco Academy of Arts, and studied textiles and surface pattern design at the California School of Professional Fabric Design in Berkley. She also has two Certificates of Achievement in horticulture and arboriculture from Diablo Valley College.
The Garden was once a four hundred acre fruit farm producing walnuts and Bartlett pears in Ygnacio Valley. It was purchased by Herbert Howe Bancroft in 1880. The pears were awarded first place and sent to the East Coast and England. The farm was passed to Phillip Bancroft Sr. and later to Phillip Bancroft Jr. The property was rezoned for city residential use. It was then sold to developers to expand Walnut Creek. The last walnut orchard on the property was cut down in 1971. Phillip Bancroft Jr. gave three acres of this piece to his wife, Ruth Bancroft, who at the age of 63 planted a new garden of succulents from her vast collection. Ruth continues to be active with the Garden at the age of 103. The Garden is protected by a conservation easement, which ensures the property will always remain a Garden. Today the Garden is a non-profit. It owns the Garden and raises funds for it. It is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. It is located at 1552 Bancroft, Walnut Creek.
