Programs
Mount Dablo State Park, Wednesday, May 4, 2016
The Volunteer Exchange Program will meet Wednesday, May 4 in the Fireside Room at Gateway at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Rich McDrew, Vice President and Board Director of the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association, (MDIA). He is a Bay Area native with a twenty-three year career in the United States Secret Service and worked eleven years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Now retired, he is an active environmentalist. Through a series of photographs, he will tell stories about Mount Diablo seldom heard, especially how "Jackass Canyon" got its name.
MDIA is an all-volunteer non-profit organization supporting Mount Diablo State Park for forty plus years with educational initiatives, interpretive publications and programs to foster an enhanced and enjoyable visitor experience.
Mount Diablo State Park is an ecological treasure of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a preserved wilderness in midst of ever advancing urban encroachment. From a summit of 3849 feet, wild flowers, extensive trails systems, wild life and distinctive rock formations are available to the curious, the adventurous or those who seek moments of peace and solitude to revitalize the spirit. It should be explored on foot to appreciate plants, wildlife, unique geology and even traces of forgotten history. More than 700,000 people visit the Park each year.
The area of "Castle Rock" will be closed to visitors from February through July 31 to help protect Peregrine Falcons during their nesting season. This is an annual closure. The Falcons are listed as "Fully Protected Species" in California. It is territorial and highly sensitive to disturbance during nesting season.
Free handouts will be available about the Park. Non-members are welcome.
