Volunteer Exchange Will Learn About Vertical Gardening, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023
The Volunteer Exchange Program of Rossmoor (VEP) will invite Dr. Neville Chang, a Rossmoor resident and a past guest lecturer, to give a talk about “Vertical Crop Production/Gardening” on Wednesday, October 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
Vertical crop production aims to improve the productivity of urban and suburban farms to help feed the ever-growing global population and meet the challenges of rapid urbanization and industrialization. Vertical gardening can have other benefits for urban businesses as well: natural surfaces improve the mood, boost employee productivity and bring in more customers. Many cities around the world have put up walls of greenery to keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter, to lessen background noise, and to help purify the air.
Dr. Chang is an Entomology Society of America Board-certified professional economic entomologist specializing in global crop protection. Chang has over 50 years of field experience in crop protection and production in the US, Asia, Latin America, the European Union, Russia, and China. He moved to Rossmoor in 2013 and was on the board of an international company and a consultant to a plant gene engineering company in California until 2022.
