Arlene Pitman of Rossmoor will present her slideshow and relate her experiences hiking solo on her adventurous 36 day backpacking trip on John Muir Trail at the Volunteer Exchange Program general meeting Wednesday, January 6 at 10:30 in the Fireside Room at Gateway. Refreshments will be served.
The JMT is 211 miles long from Yosemite Valley where Pitman began her trek to Mt Whitney in California. It reaches peaks of 13,000 to 14,000 feet. Made of many canyons and granite cliffs, the climate is the mildest and sunniest of any major mountain ranges in the world.
It is accessible from July to September depending on previous snowfall and risk tolerance. A Wilderness Permit is required to enter and hike the trail. Quotas are in place to ensure hikers are not hampered by large crowds and that the fragile environment isn't unduly damaged.
Black bears and other wild animals seeking hiker's food is a significant problem. It is essential to properly protect food while on the trail. Bears that obtain human food frequently need to be killed.
The JMT in California is a part section of the Pacific Coast Trail stretching from Canada to Mexico. It is one of the top trekking destinations on Earth.
The Volunteer Exchange Program exists to help Rossmoor residents help each other. Members provide services for other members and earn credits for doing so. In turn, they can use their earned credits to obtain services from other members.
Membership dues are $15 annually and there are no additional charges except for reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses such as gasoline and parking.
It is not an emergency service and is not available to non-members.
