Resident Volunteers in Cuba
The Volunteer Exchange Program will meet Wednesday, February 1, at 10:30 A.M. in the Fireside Room at the Gateway Clubhouse. Mary Jean Odmark, a Rossmoor resident and a VEP member, will offer a talk and photos of her recent experiences in Cuba teaching English in Ciego de Avila, a city of 90,000 east of Havana. She was one of twenty-four Americans who traveled there with Global Volunteers. They were greeted with enthusiasm and appreciation. The people there have excellent educational opportunities and a fully comprehensive free health care system. They are rich in love and warmth, but have few material goods. She will describe in detail her interaction with the residents as well as the denizens of Havana.
The Global Volunteers is an internationally recognized not-for-profit managed from St. Paul,MN. More than 33,000 volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life have served in 34 countries on six continents. Through these efforts, children are fed, clothed, taught and care for. Health and cognition are improved. Schools are built, clean water is provided, dormitories are enlarged, teachers are supported, gardens are planted, libraries are equipped, pregnant women and mothers are counseled, homes are restored and much more.
Ms. Odmark has also worked with Global Volunteers teaching English in Sieldce, Poland.
