The Story of a Kiva Loan
Michelle Kreger, daughter of Rossmoor resident Sue Wetzler, will use personal stories and photos to talk about her experiences working to alleviate poverty worldwide through microfinance. As a former senior leader at Kiva, the first person-to-person microlending platform, Michelle traveled to 50 countries and worked with local organizations to facilitate over half a billion dollars in loans to individuals.
Kiva (www.kiva.org) was founded in October 2005 as a non-profit with headquarters in San Francisco. Its mission is to connect people to loans who do not have access to traditional banking. Leveraging the Internet and worldwide networks of microfinance institutions, Kiva allows individuals to lend as little as $25 to help create opportunities for those living in poverty.
Kiva has loaned $800 million dollars in 83 countries with a repayment rate of 98.4%. 100% of a loan is sent to a microfinance facility called a Field Partner, which administers the loan in the field. Four hundred fifty volunteers work with the Field Partners to edit and translate borrowers' stories to ensure a smooth transition toward a loan.
Kiva is in partnership with and supported from a set of diverse corporations, foundations, grants, and financial banking. Some supporters include the HP Company, the Pepsi Company, Pearson-Education Co, Met Life, Deutsche Bank and many more.
Kiva has grown into a global force for good and a place where acts of mutual respect, kindness and faith occur daily. It is rated as the top United States charity.
