A Talk on the Silk Road: Globalization in the Ancient World, Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020
The Volunteer Exchange will hear a presentation by Dr. Mary Mead of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco on Wednesday, Feb 5. The presentation is entitled “The Silk Road: Globalization in the Ancient World”. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
The Silk Road was actually a series of trade routes, both overland and via sea, that connected the ancient civilizations of the Far East with those in Europe and the Middle East. New technologies, art, and religions spread in both directions. Luxury goods such as silk, precious metals, and tea were transported via these routes as were gunpowder and paper.
To demonstrate this important cultural interchange, the talk will include colorful slides of some of the objects in the museum’s collection. In addition, information about visiting the museum will be provided.
Dr. Mead holds five master’s degrees as well as a PhD. She has taught at both the high school and the university level. She has been a docent with the Asian Art Museum for 8 years.
As always, non-members are welcome to attend club meetings.
The men and women of the Volunteer Exchange perform services for each other such as transportation and pet care. In this way, they earn credit hours which they can use in the future to “pay” other members for services. New members able to provide services are always welcome. Services are not available to non-members.
Detailed information about the club can be found on the club’s web page. The web page can be easily accessed via a link in the “Clubs” section on the www.rossmoor.com web page.
For more information, residents are invited to attend one of the monthly meetings or to call 906-9882.
