Famous Women of Early San Francisco, Wednesday, May 3, 2023
The Volunteer Exchange Club will invite historian Steve Johnson of the San Francisco Historical Society back to give a talk on Wednesday, May 3. The presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
Johnson will tell the stories of a number of famous women of 19th Century San Francisco including Lillie Coit and Lotta Crabtree. Coit was a patron of San Francisco's volunteer fire fighters and the benefactor for the construction of the Coit Tower in San Francisco.
Crabtree was a celebrated American actress, entertainer, comedian, and philanthropist. He will speak of how these women who left a lasting legacy are still remembered by all the city's residents and visitors.
Johnson has a degree in U. S. History from San Francisco State University and was a history teacher in Pacifica, CA for 35 years. He is also a National Park guide on Alcatraz and at the Presidio of San Francisco, where he gives walking tours focusing on California in the 19th century.
