The Volunteer Exchange met Wednesday, September 2 at 10:30 am in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
The program highlighted the White Pony Express organization, a volunteer-based non-profit dedicated to helping eliminate hunger and poverty in Contra Costa County. By freely redistributing food, toys, books and clothing, White Pony Express forms the connecting link between those with surplus and those in need.
Three programs have been established to carry out this mission: Food Rescue, Free General Store, and White Pony Inn (currently a pilot phase. Over 1,700,000 pounds of fresh, high quality food is rescued from retail such as Whole Foods, Costco, Trader Joe, Nob Hill Foods and several farmers markets. Recipients include homeless shelters, recovery centers, and residence for people with disabilities, meal providers, pantries, community youth centers & more.
The Free Store holds "mobile boutiques" at churches and community centers in improvised neighborhoods distributing clothing, books and toys for free. Donors include The Gap, Patagonia, Dutch Girl leaners, Target, The Shoe Store and many more.
The pilot phase, White Pony Inn, has used volunteer professional kills, life experiences and loving kindness for those facing life's challenges. Personalized assistance might include provisions of food and clothing, help with social services agencies, locating affordable housing, finding employment and obtaining other needed support for physical and mental health.
Erica Brooks, Vice President of Growth and Development, presented slides and more detailed information about the growth of White Pony
Express, a local organization.
Emily Karakashian, Volunteer Coordinator, accompanied answering any questions.
Refreshments was provided.
