A Talk on Adornment: Display of Wealth and Status, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022
The Volunteer Exchange will hear a presentation by Dr. Mary Mead of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco on Wednesday, Sept 7. This is the second time she has been a speaker for the club. The presentation is entitled “Adornment: Display of Wealth and Status”. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.
For thousands of years, people of all countries and cultures have ornamented themselves with intricate, and often symbolic crowns, earrings, pendants, and bracelets that are made of gold, silver, gems, pearls to attest to their wealth, status, and importance. Her talk will focus on adornments from the ancient Persians and Koreans to 18th century ethnic Indonesians to modern Chinese and South Asians. To demonstrate this important cultural spectacle, she will use colorful slides of some of the eye-catching objects in the museum’s collection to demonstrate.
Dr. Mead holds five master’s degrees as well as a PhD. She has taught at both the high school and the university level. She has been a docent with the Asian Art Museum for ten years.
The men and women of the Volunteer Exchange perform services for each other, such as transportation and pet care. In this way, they earn credit hours, which they can use in the future to “pay” other members for services. New members able to provide services are always welcome. Services are not available to non-members.
Detailed information about the club can be found on the club’s web page at https://rossmoorvep.weebly.com/, or be accessed via a link in the “Clubs” section on the www.rossmoor.com web page. For further information, call 707-685-2655.
As always, non-members are welcome to attend club meetings.
